Every fall and winter, cases of the influenza virus, or flu, surge in the United States. Although typically considered similar to a common cold, influenza can be a major condition with important health effects.

Why is there a "flu season"?

Increased contact with others

Germs spread easily when people meet in enclosed spaces with limited ventilation. Examples of how close contact increases in the fall and winter include:

  • Children spending time around peers and adults when school starts

  • People returning to work after vacation and filling office buildings

  • Family and friends visiting for the holidays

Changing weather

In cooler weather, a shielding layer around the influenza virus hardens. This allows the virus to survive for longer and lengthens the duration of sickness.

Additionally, humidity levels drop in the winter months. This enables the respiratory droplets that spread influenza to travel further than usual.

Symptoms of the flu

  • Fever

  • Head and body aches

  • Stuffy/runny nose

  • Coughing

  • Tiredness

  • Sneezing

A loss of taste or smell is typically not associated with the flu—if experiencing this, reach out to a healthcare provider!

How can I prevent the flu?

Practicing proper preventative care, such as washing your hands regularly, avoiding contact with ill individuals, staying at home when unwell, and getting the yearly flu vaccine, are all ways to reduce the spread of influenza.
