Phantom limb syndrome is a condition faced by over half of all amputees, where sensations are felt in a missing limb. It is typically chronic, or long-term, and can be painful at times.

What causes phantom limb syndrome?

Currently, there is no known cause. However, research has shown that several factors may lead to the risk of developing phantom limb syndrome.

Some include:

  • Improper anesthetic procedure

  • Preoperative pain

  • Traumatic amputation

Examples include feeling pain in a limb that is no longer there, or in areas near where an amputation took place.

  • Feeling like a limb is

    • In an unusual position

    • Moving around

    • Shrinking

    • Still attached

How is phantom limb pain treated?

Although no one treatment can be considered 100% effective for phantom limb pain, combinations of multiple different treatments and therapies have been proven to alleviate symptoms for some patients. These can include:

  • Medications

  • Spinal cord stimulation
